The Philippines or officially known as Republic of the Philippines is a mesmerizing country located in South-East of Asia lying in the North Pacific Ocean. It possesses over 7100 Islands and around 90 Million people call the Philippines their home and a country that is so popular for its amazing coastlines that are over 320, 000 kilometers long.   1. The Philippines consist of 7107 Islands and were named “The Philippines” after King Philip II. It became the country´s common name in 1898.
  2. Those Islands are divided into 3 main Islands which are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, the two largest islands are Luzon and Mindanao which make up for two-thirds of the total land area. Only around one-third of the islands is inhabited.
  3. What do they speak in the Philippines? Philipinian? Nope. They speak Tagalog, you will find a lot of Spanish words and words that sound similar to Spanish. English is their second language. So it is very easy for foreigners who travels in the Philippines to communicate and get their way around!
  4. Philippine Peso (PHP) is the country's currency and major exports (despite coconuts) are semiconductors and garment products.
  5. The capital city is Manila and it is the second most populated city in the Philippines after Quezon City. Quezon City was the former capital until  1976. Did you know that Manila is one of the most densely populated cities in the World?
  6. The name Manila takes its name from a white flower that grew on mangrove trees, known by the Filipinos as nilad ( ‘May nilad’) and can be translated to meaning of ‘there are nilad there.’
  7. Makati City is also known as the “Business Center” of the Philippines.
  8. The Philippines was a Spanish colony since 1521 to 1898.  Then, it became US territory until 1946 when it gained independence.
  9. The Philippine University of San Carlos in Cebu City which was founded by the Spaniard in the year 1595 is older than the Harvard University and it is even the oldest university in Asia!
  10. Because of the Spanish influence, Filipinos are predominantly Christians with 90% of the population practicing some sort of Christianity, most being Roman Catholics.
