Erik Matti is No Longer Darna's Director
On Thursday, Erik Matti confirmed his resignation as the Director of "Darna." A movie that draws anticipation among Filipinos. In a statement, he also included a message to the movie's lead actress, Liza Soberano.
Matti who also directs famous films like "On the Job" and "BuyBust" has released his statement on Instagram, Thursday Night. Hours before, ABS-CBN's Films' Star Cinema has announced his exit from the project. "Creative differences" has been the cause of the resignation.
“As it has been announced, I have officially resigned from the movie Darna. It’s been 5 years and how I wish I could have finished it after all the hard work that went into preparing and putting it together. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out ideally for both parties,” the Director captioned.
In 2014, Star Cinema firstly announced its adaptation. Matti was the director. During that time, Angel Locsin was the superheroine. Locsin, who carried the role in a 2005 series had to give up the role in 2017. This is due to her spine injury.
“Darna is personal to me,” Matti stated. “My first project in the industry was as continuity supervisor for Peque Gallaga’s Darna with Anjanette Abayari. And doing this modern reboot of the classic superhero, I feel that I have come full circle in this industry.”
Matti was talking about to the 1994 movie “Darna: Ang Pagbabalik” — the last released movie centering on the Mars Ravelo character.
“I would like to thank my staff and crew who have toiled through the process bringing forth brilliant design and execution ideas as to how we can bring to life a uniquely modern take of our iconic Filipino superhero that can be relevant to the times,” he mentioned.
Soberano as Darna
Matti revealed that the modern version of Darna's costume was finalized. All the cast, also including the villain Valentina and Narda's brother, had all been completed. Scenes with Soberano as Narda, who is the alter ego of Darna had already been shot.
During the months Soberano has been working as Darna in the set, Matti has persistently applauded the actress for her diligence and passion for the role she is carrying. He expressed confidence that her final look would definitely silence those who are being critical of her casting.
“To Liza Soberano, thank you for the dedication and commitment. I’m sure you’ll be a kickass Darna. To Star Cinema, ABS-CBN, and the next director, I wish you all the best for this project,” said Matti.
