"Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita" is one of Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan's most popular flicks. And now Julia Barretto has opened up about wanting to remake it with Joshua Garcia.
Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita (Because I Love You So Much) is a 1998 Filipino drama romance film produced by Star Cinema, starring Claudine Barretto, Diether Ocampo and Rico Yan. The movie was directed by Wenn V. Deramas. The story is about Mela, the campus beauty who earned the reputation of a “Bad Girl.” But underneath the seductive clothing and uninhibited behavior is a sensitive and vulnerable soul.
Mela hides a painful past. Her mother died at a young age, leaving her father desolate and driving him to alcoholism. Numerous beatings from her father caused Mela to run away from home, and seek shelter with an aunt. Despite living an immoral life as a mistress, Mela’s aunt is kind-hearted and loving to her ward. Mela herself constantly seeks acceptance and satisfaction in relationships with different men. Mela’s current boyfriend, Ryan, is also a troubled soul who cannot get along with his father. The youngest and the only boy among three children, Ryan’s source of emotional support is his mother. Mela and Ryan start off as friends before going steady, but it is not long before Ryan becomes unfaithful.
Hurt and determined to change her destiny, Mela resolves to look for “Mr. Perfect,” who turns out to be Miguel. Rich, intelligent, and good-mannered. A typical aristocrat guy who is always formal, all-business and snobbish. He portrays the typical “guy-next-door” women fall for, but has a superior personality which is a turn-off. Miguel’s only fault is his tendency to rigid self-discipline. Besides being a member of the school’s discipline committee, Miguel also helps manage the family business. Miguel’s father died while he was young, and his mother was left to raise him and his brother. His brother also died, suffering a broken heart from a relationship with an immoral wife.
Mela sets her sights on Miguel, but Miguel refuses to give her the time of day. Mela is relentless, and dares Miguel to a bet, the consequence being, he would have to spend a weekend with Mela. Miguel loses, and, despite his fears, enjoys the company of Mela. During their weekend together, Miguel discovers the beauty in Mela, and falls hopelessly in love. Love eventually transforms Mela into the person who would please Miguel. But the story doesn’t end there. The relationship must strive through jealousy, misunderstanding and animosity from Miguel’s mother.
The younger Julia Barretto shared that she would not be opposed to portraying her aunt's famous "bad girl" role in the 1998 original. "Gawin na natin, (Let us make it)" she told Darla Sauler in a video uploaded, before adding: "Sana dumating iyong perfect time. (I hope the perfect time will come.)" Julia said that she would love it if Garcia would play Miguel, explaining that her "Love You to the Stars and Back" co-star is perfect for the part as he doesn't have to pretend to be a "good guy." She also said that her dream is for her aunt Claudine to be part of the remake as well, a sentiment she first shared on Twitter last October. She said in her tweeter account Julia Barretto@BarrettoJulia this message “MAMA THIS IS OUR DREAM!!!”
Should the remake push through, it would have to take a backseat to already-made plans for a movie and a teleserye starring Julia and Garcia. Julia revealed in the same interview with Sauler that their movie, describing it as a "rom-com na ibang-iba," is scheduled to be released this summer. She also shared that they will begin work on a new teleserye after Garcia's "The Good Son" concludes.
On the other hand, a sweet photo of Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto is now making the rounds online.
The picture depicts Garcia kissing the forehead of Julia while they are at what appears to be a mountain peak. Here are some of the comments of the netizens who saw the picture. “✨ I CAN SEE CLAUDINE BARRETTO AND RICO YAN ✨” said Elika Circa (@elkcrc). Several netizens noticed the similarities between the two and the tandem of Julia’s aunt, Claudine, and the late Rico Yan. As of writing, Garcia and Julia’s picture, which was posted by one of their fans, already has thousands of “likes” and “retweets” combined.
Some netizens said they actually see Yan and Claudine in the younger love team, with a Twitter user saying Garcia and Julia can actually pass as the “millennial version” of the Claudine-Rico Yan love team. Here are some of their tweets. From Maria Patricia Limbo@saerwenostariel she said “Julia barreto and joshua garcia are the millenial versions of claudine barreto and rico yan mygad.” Another from simon vargas@simonmaicon saying “I'm actually quite convinced that Joshua Garcia and Julia B are the reincarnation of Rico Yan and Claudine.” From allyana@callmejennine she said “Sana may remake yung Got 2 Believe.

The chemistry of the two young artist (Julia and Joshua) was seen in their movie Vince, Kath and James and the “Maalaala Mo Kaya” episode that touch the hearts of the viewers. The two real life close friends, Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia didn't have to work too hard to once again show off their developing onscreen chemistry for the episode. The pair drew praise from viewers for their portrayal of teens whose love is tested when one of them is stricken with cancer. Julia Barretto played Aika, whose fear of being heartbroken became the least of her concerns when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She (Julia) soon met John played by Garcia, who held a grim view that life is short and that anyone can die at any given moment.
Together, they tried to get past individual and collective tribulations, whether it be Aika's reluctance to love because she dreads the day she would die and break her partner's heart, or John's patience and loyalty being tested. In a shock and cruel twist, however, it turned out that John died in an accident while Aika finished her treatment and is now in remission.
After the episode, fans were quick to applaud the two young stars for doing justice to emotionally charged scenes such as Aika finding out about John's accident. Their names immediately shot to the top of the country's trending topics list on Twitter, with many now convinced that their widely praised performance on the Metro Manila Film Festival entry "Vince & Kath & James" wasn't a fluke.
Despite the chemistry that the love team have Julia Barretto still appears uncomfortable answering questions about having a real-life romance with onscreen partner Joshua Garcia. "We both waited for this time to come and we don't want to lose our focus," Julia answered in one of her interview as she explained her reluctance to enter a relationship at this point in her career.
Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia are coming off widely praised performances for "Maalaala Mo Kaya" and the movie "Vince & Kath & James." This led to clamour from their fans for them to turn reel into real. But Julia Barretto's sights remain firmly on her goal. Adding that she wants to make headlines because of her onscreen work rather than who she's dating, the teen actress furthered: "I want our work to speak for us and not because of what's happening behind the camera." Julia Barretto said she isn't going to let this second chance of sorts slip by. "I'm glad kasi before wala akong mahanap-hanap na love team and now I have so that's really good," Julia said.
