On national television and online world the feeling of exhilaration exploded last Friday when ‘80s power couple, the former Mr and Mrs. Gabby Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta finally appeared on screen together in a fast food chain McDonald’s advertisement.
The food chain definitely landed a upheaval by reuniting the former husband and wife in their TV commercial after networks and major movie companies tried and failed to do so for so many years.
An appealing Valentine treat for the public—Sharon-Gabby fans or not—the TVC was set against the meaningful OPM love song “Kamusta Ka” with the Megastar seated in McDonald’s, about to take a bite into her Chicken McDo. A chance encounter, the handsome dramatic actor suddenly appears in front of her asking, “Do you mind if I join you?” Surprised, Cuneta quickly gets a hold of herself and replies, “Ikaw naman parang wala tayong pinagsamahan.” Both self-conscious as they go through their chicken and fries, sparks soon fly as they steal glances at one another, giggle and loosen up. The romantic mood finally reaches its climax when Concepcion reaches across the table to wipe the corner of Cuneta’s mouth. A typical mushy scene in romantic flicks, the ex-lovers finally burst out laughing when the Megastar playfully tells him there was nothing to wipe off in the first place, and throws a napkin his way.
Meanwhile the mega star Sharon Cuneta feels overwhelmed by the positive feedback she has been receiving since her onscreen reunion with former husband Gabby Concepcion aired. In a lengthy Instagram post, Cuneta shared that the success of her new project with Concepcion has given her “so many mixed emotions.” She said “I had a feeling this would be something special,” she said. “But I didn’t know what to expect in terms of how our public would receive us now that we are older, now that we have been apart for 26 years onscreen, and not exactly friends off-screen.”
Cuneta admitted that she also did not know what to expect of Concepcion when they were about to shoot the commercial and that she prayed so hard that it would at least be pleasant. But seeing now how their onscreen reunion, no matter how brief, made a lot of people happy, Cuneta said she is “too happy, in major disbelief, and I don’t know what else and how else I am feeling.” Cuneta then thanked Concepcion, who she referred to as her "original Prince Charming." “Thank you, Gabby. For the years of true love, for KC, for all the happy memories. Thank you for and to McDonald’s for allowing us to do this together. Thank you to our amazing God who has allowed what I thought would never be possible in KC’s lifetime to happen,” she said. Cuneta said she herself was surprised how the two of them easily connected and were able to do what was asked of them during the shoot. “We just picked up from where we left off. The power of ‘US,’ Gabby. May God bless our renewed friendship and may we truly learn to forgive as we say we do and keep only all the good that we shared, for the next 100 years,” she said.
To end her post, Cuneta said her reconnection with Concepcion has been God’s biggest gift for it made not only the two of them happy, but also their daughter. In a separate update on Facebook on Sunday, Cuneta admitted that she once thought that she could no longer make a comeback. “I must admit the view from here is still so much better than down there, where I had fallen, been kicked, left for dead for years. God is good and faithful. I feel like He just pulled me out so effortlessly (of course) and quickly from some quicksand I had been struggling to pull myself out of but never could,” she said. “I am eternally grateful. You will never know how very thankful this girl’s heart is for your love and support. Thank you for making a little twelve-year-old girl’s dreams come true. And thank you for allowing the big girl she has become to continue dreaming,” she said. Cuneta also thanked Concepcion for being her “partner” again in this new and important chapter in her life.
“I am once again... JUST Gettin’ Started...for real this time! Watch me! Watch what God has in store for all of us still,” she said.
On the other hand, KC Concepcion, the only daughter of screen veterans Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, made public a message for her father following the onscreen reunion of her parents. The 32-year-old actress left the comment on her father's Instagram selfie with Cuneta, taken during the shoot of the now-viral McDonald's commercial ad featuring the former couple. "Don't ever leave again," Concepcion wrote.
In another post of her father showing a video of him with Cuneta, Concepcion noted a similarity between her parents, saying, "Papa always videoing priceless moments, like Mama."
Her comments caught the attention of Gabby's thousands of followers, with many expressing happiness for their family. Cuneta was also among those who saw her daughter's comments, prompting her to reply. "That's true," Cuneta said, referring to her and Gabby frequently taking videos, "and you better thank us [because] you have so many photos of your lifetime because of us two! And your work."
"But your Papi was so having fun selfie-ing his selfies! Cutie like you mija! I diezvente you so much, Qwisteena," the veteran singer added, using a term that was formerly a code for "I love you" between her and Gabby.
And lately, on the Instagram account of the Megastar is where she shared throwback photo of her and Gabby along with their baby, their daughter KC Concepcion. It was in black and white but the colors of love and of happiness of the people on the photo are in screaming colors. The post was entailed with a written caption which told, “Goodnight, @itskcconcepcion Kaycee-Waysie. I Love you so much, mija. Dulces sueños. Goodnight a tu papá también. @concepciongabby“. This has then gathered several reactions and comments from the people of the social media platform. One netizen indicated, “Looking forward to a #ShaGabmovie soon after the awaited Mcdo commercial! out with the old hanash, in with a new and goodvibe perspective in a professional working relationship.” But there is this particular who said that good thing, the husband of Sharon, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, is not jealous of whatever is happening to her and former husband Gabby. The actress then answered that Kiko is actually super secured and supportive.
Considered as one of the most popular "love teams" in the '80s, Concepcion and Cuneta's onscreen romance bled into real life, paving the way for their 1984 wedding. It can be recalled that it was in 1981 when the would-be couple first met on the set of “Dear Heart,” then-15-year-old Cuneta’s launching movie. A box office success, two more Sharon-Gabby movies quickly followed via “P.S. I Love You” in 1981 and “My Only Love” in 1982. The couple’s romance went beyond the screen when in 1984, a few months after Cuneta’s 18th birthday, the famous love team got married for real. Soon their only daughter KC was born, but within three short years, their marriage fell apart. While each saw to their respective careers and personal lives, their only post-annulment project was the movie “Tayong Dalawa” in 1992, making the new TVC their first reunion project in almost 26 years.
After their marriage was annulled, and they have both re-married. Concepcion is currently with Genevieve Gonzales, his third wife, while Cuneta is married to Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan.
Since he returned to the Philippines in 2008 to resume his showbiz career -- he was based in the US for a time -- Concepcion has crossed paths with Cuneta numerous times, but they never managed to have a conversation. That is, until their McDonald's project. As of press time, the TVC, which McDonald posted on its official Facebook page, tallied 1.3 million views, 80,000 reactions, 45,000 shares, and 10,000 comments.
